APRI TESDA Capacitates Community with Livelihood Program
TEAMWORK TO DELIVER. Active participants Sheryl Labaguis and Rose Maloles demonstrate their skills in drafting a pattern on a cloth.
Sto. Tomas City - Twenty one women under the Barangay Sta. Elena Enterprise Program were given a simple graduation ceremony as they finished the thirteen-day community based training on basic sewing skills and entrepreneurship. The ceremony was held last July 3 at the Barangay Hall of Sta. Elena in the City of Sto. Tomas in Batangas. The training program is sponsored by AP Renewables Inc (APRI), an Aboitiz Power company that currently operates the Makban Geothermal Complex that spans through Batangas and Laguna. The program is also made in partnership with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
As part of the sponsorship, APRI also gave 21 units of sewing machines and sewing start-up kits. To inspire more women to be part of this sustainable movement, Sta. Elena Brgy. Captain Proceso “Boy” Mendoza intimated in his speech, “Sana ipagpatuloy ninyo at mas marami pang tao ang magsumikap gaya ninyo para sa kanilang pamilya” (I hope you continue this and that more people strive for their families). He also pledged ongoing support such as marketing assistance and stakeholder meetings to ensure project sustainability. APRI CSR and Community Relations Supervisor Ishtar Villegas-Layog on the other hand emphasized that APRI will work hand-in-hand with its partners to help the project’s sustainability. To further equip the participants with industry-recognized dressmaking skills and enhance their employability rate and entrepreneurial potential, they will be enrolled in TESDA to secure NCII Dressmaking Certification.
Angelina Magnaye, one of the beneficiaries, shared her experience, “Marami kaming natutunan sa loob ng 10 araw – pananahi ng bedsheet, throw pillow cases, kurtina, basahan, at higit pa rito ang pagsisimula ng negosyo” (We learned a lot in ten days, sewing bedsheets, throw pillow cases, curtains, rugs, and more importantly, how to start a business).
APRI Vice President for Corporate Services Leonardo Robel said, “We can only advance our business and communities when we work hand-in-hand with our stakeholders. I am excited to see how this project can positively impact the lives of our women and their families.”
