Aboitiz-led Thunder Consortium celebrates CBK turnover milestone with Laguna stakeholders

Thunder Consortium leaders — (L-R) J-Power Asia Business Department Director Akihiro Osajima, Aboitiz Renewables Chief Operating Officer Alexander Coo, First Vice President and General Manager for Hydro Noreen Vicencio, Aboitiz Renewables President Jimmy Villaroman, and Sumitomo Corporation of the Philippines Energy Transformation (EX) Department General Manager Shinichiro Ichimura — underscore their strong partnership in delivering clean and reliable energy for the Philippines.

The Thunder Consortium, composed of Aboitiz Renewables, Inc., Sumitomo Corporation, and Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER), held a thanksgiving celebration at the Caliraya Lake Mountain Resort, Laguna with partners and stakeholders following the successful transition of stewardship of the 797-megawatt Caliraya-Botocan-Kalayaan Hydroelectric Power Plants (CBK HEPP) from the Philippine government.
During the event, the Thunder Consortium underscored its support for long-term collaboration with national government agencies, local government units, and host communities across Laguna.
“These hydroelectric power plants are now cornerstones of our portfolio, but the value of the CBK hydro complex is not measured in megawatts alone—it is measured in the jobs it sustains, the communities it energizes, and the families whose lives depend on the power it generates,” Aboitiz Renewables President Jimmy Villaroman said in his speech.
The event was attended by provincial and local leaders, including Laguna Vice Governor Atty. Mantangol Jose “JM” Carait III and Laguna Provincial Chief of Staff Mr. Jerry Pelayo, representing Governor Marisol “Sol” Aragones.
“For Laguna, this facility (CBK) is not only a key infrastructure asset but also a catalyst for economic growth, industrial development, and community progress. Reliable power enables investments, jobs, digitalization, and climate-resilient development across our province,” said Mr. Pelayo.
He added, “Governor Aragones welcomes AboitizPower’s stewardship and long-term commitment to operational excellence, innovation, and sustainability. She looks forward to strengthened collaboration – particularly in renewable integration, environmental protection, and inclusive community development for host communities.”
A key highlight of the celebration was when attendees signed on the Wall of Commitment, pledging their support of clean energy, responsible resource management, and sustained community partnership.
More than 200 participants joined the activity, representing local government agencies, partner institutions, and host communities, including the Department of Education, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, National Power Corporation, Laguna Lake Development Authority, the Philippine National Police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Children International Philippines Inc., the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Provincial Training Center, and the Laguna State Polytechnic University.
Community leaders from the five CBK host municipalities: Kalayaan, Lumban, Cavinti, Majayjay, and Luisiana were also present, along with representatives from the 19 host barangays, reflecting the importance of local partnership supporting the hydroelectric complex.
