EDITORIAL: Sun, Fun, and Safety: Don’t let Summer Illness Spoil Season

Every year, when the summer months arrive in the Philippines, many people look forward to beach trips, family outings, and school vacations. However, summer also brings a number of health risks that Filipinos should not ignore. The extreme heat, sudden rain showers, and increased outdoor activities create the perfect conditions for common summer diseases such as Heat Stroke, Dengue Fever, and Food Poisoning. While these illnesses may seem preventable, many cases continue to rise every year because of lack of awareness and simple negligence.

One major concern during summer is dehydration and heat-related illnesses. Long hours under the scorching sun, especially for workers, commuters, and children playing outside, can lead to serious health problems like Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke. At the same time, stagnant water left by occasional rains becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry Dengue Fever. In many communities, improper waste disposal and poor sanitation further increase the risk of infection.

Another issue that often goes unnoticed is food safety. Because food spoils faster in hot weather, improper storage and unhygienic preparation can easily cause Food Poisoning and other stomach-related illnesses. Street food, while part of Filipino culture, can become risky if cleanliness and proper cooking are not observed. This makes it important for both vendors and consumers to be more cautious during the summer months.

Ultimately, preventing summer diseases is a shared responsibility. Government agencies, local communities, and individual families must work together to promote cleanliness, proper hydration, and awareness. Simple actions such as drinking enough water, eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and practicing proper food hygiene can save lives
