Santa Cruz, Laguna Commemorates 81st Liberation Day Honoring WWII Heroes
The town of Santa Cruz, Laguna solemnly commemorated its 81st Liberation Day today March 5, 2026, honoring the courage and sacrifice of Filipino and Chinese guerrilla fighters who fought to free the town from Japanese occupation during World War II. The event was led by Mayor Benjo Agarao and attended by local officials, veterans, community leaders, and residents.““The commemoration recalls the pivotal events of early 1945, when Santa Cruz became a key battleground in southern Luzon. Following the Battle of Santa Cruz on January 26, 1945, Filipino guerrillas, including Hunters ROTC, HUKBALAHAP, and Marking Guerrillas, joined by the Chinese-led Wa Chi 48th Squadron, engaged Japanese forces in a series of operations aimed at liberating the province.““Although the guerrillas had successfully liberated the Los Baños Internment Camp in late February 1945, the town of Santa Cruz was still partially under Japanese control. With renewed determination, Filipino and Chinese guerrillas advanced toward Santa Cruz. The Wa Chi unit served as guides, provided intelligence, and monitored Japanese movements while Filipino fighters crossed strategic bridges and positions.““The coordinated operations culminated in the overthrow of Japanese forces and members of the Makabayang Katipunan ng mga Pilipino (Makapili), resulting in the death of approximately 60 Japanese soldiers and 100 Makapili members. The town was officially declared liberated on March 5, 1945, marking a decisive moment in Laguna’s wartime history.““During the modern day commemoration, Mayor Benjo Agarao emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom. ““The 81st Liberation Day celebration featured wreath laying ceremonies, speeches by local leaders, and tributes to surviving veterans. ““Residents reflected on the historical significance of the day, honoring the legacy of the guerrilla fighters and the local citizens who supported the resistance.““Santa Cruz’s Liberation Day serves as a reminder of the town’s resilience and the enduring spirit of heroism that helped shape the Philippines’ path to freedom during one of its most challenging periods.
