DOST-Cavite, DOST-FPRDI assess S&T interventions for furniture makers’ cooperative in Silang

By Marielle P. Nueva
The Department of Science and Technology – Provincial Science and Technology Office Cavite  (DOST-Cavite), in partnership with the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI), conducted a field visit and facility assessment at the Hagiyo Ifu-Cav Producers Cooperative (HICPC) in Lumil, Silang, Cavite. The activity aimed to identify appropriate science and technology (S&T) interventions that can further enhance the cooperative’s furniture production operations and promote sustainable manufacturing practices.
During the site visit, DOST-FPRDI evaluated the cooperative’s facility and assessed possible areas for the installation of equipment that may help address the increasing volume of sawdust and wood cut-offs generated from furniture-making activities. Through the proposed interventions, the agencies aim to support HICPC in improving material utilization, minimizing production waste, and increasing operational efficiency.
The team also explored possible technical trainings and capability-building programs aligned with the needs and objectives of the cooperative. These initiatives are expected to strengthen the skills and productivity of HICPC members while enhancing the quality and competitiveness of their locally produced furniture products.
The activity builds on the earlier Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) conducted by DOST-Cavite for the cooperative. HICPC Chairperson Mr. Raul C. Biniahan, together with members of the cooperative, assisted the DOST-Cavite and DOST-FPRDI teams during the assessment and site inspection. The collaboration highlights DOST’s continued commitment to empowering local industries and communities through innovation, technology, and sustainable development initiatives.
