 DOST, DTI Rizal strengthen MSME competitiveness through business innovation program

RODRIGUEZ, Rizal — In line with the celebration of National MSME Month this July, the Department of Science and Technology – Provincial Science and Technology Office in Rizal (DOST-PSTO-Rizal), in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Rizal, conducted the Business Growth and Development Training for 31 members of two community associations in Rodriguez, Rizal, July 9.

Designed to enhance the entrepreneurial competencies and overall sustainability of local enterprises, the training provided hands-on sessions on the Business Model Canvas (BMC), targeted marketing strategies, business coaching, and strategic networking. Beyond technology transfer, DOST aims to cultivate an innovation-driven mindset among beneficiaries, adopting a holistic approach to establishing sustainable livelihood opportunities in the province.

The initiative reflects the shared commitment of DOST and DTI to boost micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) competitiveness by merging science, technology, and innovation (STI) with practical business development. DOST-Rizal Officer-in-Charge Engr. Mhark Ellgine A. Libao and DTI-Rizal Business Counselor Mr. Reymond S. Melendres led discussions on business model development and enterprise management, providing participants with practical tools to identify market opportunities, refine value propositions, and make informed strategic decisions.

Through the BMC workshop facilitated by OIC Libao and an interactive business simulation led by Mr. Melendres, participants applied core concepts to realistic market scenarios. The simulation allowed community members to test business strategies, manage resources, and adapt to changing market conditions within a collaborative learning environment—reinforcing essential competencies in strategic planning, financial management, and teamwork.

This joint effort demonstrates the continuing partnership between DOST-Rizal and DTI-Rizal in delivering comprehensive support to local entrepreneurs. By equipping MSMEs with both technical and managerial solutions, the program empowers local associations to build resilient, market-ready businesses that drive community development and regional economic growth.
