UPHSL MARKS 50 YEARS OF EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE AND CHARACTER FORMATION

BIÑAN CITY, LAGUNA — The University of Perpetual Help System Laguna (UPHSL) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, marking five decades of providing education, healthcare and character formation to Filipino families and communities.

The golden anniversary highlights the institution’s journey from its beginnings in Laguna to its growing presence in education and healthcare, while looking ahead to a new chapter of expansion and wider service.

During the anniversary media interview, Sir Mark Carlo Tamayo, Senior Executive Vice President of UPHS-JONELTA, underscored the institution’s contribution through its graduates, particularly in healthcare and allied services.

Over the years, UPHSL has produced thousands of graduates, including nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals who have pursued careers in hospitals and institutions in different parts of the world.

According to Tamayo, many of the university’s graduates are now working in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Middle East and Singapore, contributing to the global reputation of Filipino healthcare professionals.

“Napakarami na po naming graduates na nandoon na po sa iba't ibang mga hospital worldwide,” Tamayo said, noting the presence of UPHSL graduates in various countries.

He said the institution’s mission is rooted in the vision of its founders, Dr. Jose P. Tamayo and Dr. Josefina Tamayo, who sought to serve the country through education.

This mission, Tamayo said, continues through the university’s graduates who bring their knowledge and skills to different parts of the world.

TARGET TO DOUBLE STUDENT POPULATION

Looking ahead, Tamayo said growth will be a major focus of UPHSL over the next five years.

The university aims to double its student population within the next five years, with plans to strengthen its existing campuses and establish additional ones.

UPHSL currently has six campuses, and the institution is targeting the establishment of at least three new campuses within the next five years, primarily focusing on expansion in Luzon.

The expansion is part of the university’s broader effort to make quality education accessible to more students while responding to the growing demand for professional and specialized programs.

EXPANDING ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION

In Laguna, Tamayo emphasized UPHSL’s role in providing quality education to students in the province.

Healthcare and allied services remain among the institution’s major areas, with programs in nursing, healthcare and pharmacy.

Engineering is another major program area, followed by education and hospitality management.

Tamayo noted that graduates from these programs also pursue opportunities abroad. Engineering graduates, for instance, have found employment opportunities in the Middle East, while hospitality graduates commonly pursue careers in cruise ships and hotels.

The university also offers programs in maritime studies, criminology and other fields, while continuing to encourage professionals and graduates to pursue further education and upgrade their qualifications.

For Tamayo, the institution’s role extends beyond producing graduates. Its continuing mission is to provide opportunities for Filipinos to gain quality education and use their knowledge and skills in serving their communities and the country.

As UPHSL marks its 50th year, the university looks toward expanding its reach while remaining anchored on its founding principle, “Character Building is Nation Building.”

The golden anniversary thus serves not only as a celebration of five decades of accomplishments, but also as a starting point for the institution’s next chapter—one focused on growth, innovation, wider access to education and continued service to Filipino families and communities.
